Join The Broad for our brand new ITALIAN FOR FOODIES class / cultural exchange group.

Italian for Foodies will be a 6 week course using Italian food as a lens for the Italian language and culture. Expect to pick up basic phrases for travel and dining, learn the origins and traditions of your favorite foods, eat lots of delicious food, try your hand at making fresh pasta, drink tasty wine, and make a few new friends along the way!

  • Level: All (Please note, this course will cover some basic italian but is a culture NOT language class)

About your instructor:

Elise Canup is an Italofile and gastronome hailing from Richmond Virginia. Her interest in Italy lies at the intersection of its food, its art, and its history—only appropriate for the holder of a Master’s in Italian Studies from Georgetown University who is fluent in Italian (ask her about her thesis on the gastronomic history of the Columbian Exchange!).

Elise has extensive experience living and working in Italy. While there she has studied at La Sapienza University, interned with the Rome Sustainable Food Project, worked on organic farms, and lead culinary tours up and down the Peninsula. While stateside, she has worked as an interpreter and curatorial assistant for a travelling exhibit of Vatican artworks, as the program coordinator The Italian Garden Project, and as the farm manager for Victory Farms.

Spanish Basics: Week One

Join The Broad for our first 101 course: español edition!

This course will take place over 4 weeks with 2 classes a week on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8PM - first class on Monday 1/14.

Meant for those with little or no Spanish experience who want to learn the foundations - this Broadly Speaking 101 is perfect for anyone planning a trip to the Spanish speaking world or those who simply want to be able to communicate with their neighbors here in Richmond!

Expect to learn grammar basics including past and present tenses as well as key phrases around travel, food, hobbies, and everyday info (months, telling time, colors, etc.)! This class will be taught in Spanish by a native speaker.

  • Level: Meant for beginners!

  • Instructor: Natalie Diaz

  • Time: Mondays and Wednesdays 6:30PM-8PM

This course will take place over two days (Sat + Sun) and feature 8 hours of intstructions plus activities (i.e. food and language practice in the real world)!

Meant for those with previous Spanish experience who need a touch up - this Broadly Speaking Boot Camp is perfect for anyone planning a trip to the Spanish speaking world or those who simply want to be able to communicate with their neighbors here in Richmond!

Expect a review of the present, past, and subjunctive tenses as well as key phrases around travel, work, food, and business! This class will be taught in Spanish and you'll have the opportunity to practice the language yourself the entire weekend!

  • Level: Previous experience expected (familiarity with basic present, past, and subjunctive conjugation structures)

Come on over and get an introduction to calligraphy!

In this workshop, Kat Daroy of Capital Calligraphy will go over what calligraphy is, the basic techniques, and the tools you'll need to get started in pointed-pen calligraphy. You'll practice pen strokes and work through letters. By the end, you'll write a simple quote in your own distinct style!

The Three Sisters and Four Centuries of Virginia Women

Lunch and learn about four centuries of Virginia women in food, from the Powhatan Indians to Mary Randolph's enslaved cooks, from how tea rooms, yes tea rooms, played a role in the suffrage movement to today's female-run kitchens and farms. Our lunch at The Broad will be based on the Virginia League of Women Voters' first cookbook and the Peytonia Cookbook, owned by Maggie Walker. The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation and the Virginia Museum of History and Culture will assist, too!

Note for members: The Broad will be open as usual during this event but expect a little extra activity in the salon. Quiet space can be found in the C-Suite!
